These pages contain the things I talk about in my teaching, talks, and public appearances, and that I incorporate into my own writing. I try to address the questions I am most often asked about writing, research, publishing, and the writing life.
What you'll find here is always evolving and growing as I read and learn and hear new things; I hope you will find something interesting and useful and will return often. I'm sorry that I can't be a personal help to all of you, but writing is like anything else in life: you have to do the hard work yourself, and nobody else can do it for you.
Greg Garrett is the author of the novels Free Bird and Cycling, the nonfiction books Holy Superheroes and The Gospel Reloaded: Exploring Spirituality and Faith in The Matrix (with Chris Seay), forty published short stories, and a whole lot of essays, articles, interviews, reviews, and op-ed pieces in magazines, newspapers, books, and literary journals in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. A past winner of the William Faulkner Prize for Fiction and a regional CASE Gold Medal for Nonfiction, Greg appears frequently in the media and on programs as a speaker on story, religion and spirituality, and American culture. An award-winning teacher as well as writer, Garrett has offered workshops around the country and taught creative writing at the University of Oregon and Baylor University, where he is currently Professor of English. His students have also distinguished themselves. They have entered fine graduate writing programs nationwide and published fiction in journals such as Mississippi Review, Magic Realism, and Southwestern American Literature; one received a national writing award for short fiction; another has sold screenplays and entered into producing films; another is a film executive; another is a White House Fellow. It should go without saying that Greg is delighted at their successes, and proud of them all, everyone.
