Francis J. Beckwith
Francis J. Beckwith
is Professor of Philosophy & Church-State Studies at
Baylor University, where he is also Fellow and Faculty Associate in the Baylor
Institute for Studies of Religion. Although his appointment is in the department
of philosophy,
he also teaches courses in political
science as well as in the J.
M. Dawson Institute
of Church-State Studies, where he served as its Associate Director
from July 2003 until January 2007.
In 2008-09 he will serve
on the faculty of the University of Notre Dame as the Mary Ann Remick Senior
Visiting Fellow in Notre Dame's Center
for Ethics & Culture.
Prior to arriving at Baylor in July
2003, Professor Beckwith served on the full-time faculty of the politics department
at Princeton University as a Visiting Research Fellow in the James
Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions.
A graduate of Fordham
University (Ph.D. and M.A. in philosophy) and the Washington University School
of Law, St. Louis (Master of Juridical Studies), he is the author or editor
of over a dozen books, including Defending
Life: A Moral and Legal Case Against Abortion Choice (Cambridge University
Press, 2007), To
Everyone An Answer: A Case for the Christian Worldview (InterVarsity
Press, 2004), Law,
Darwinism & Public Education: The Establishment Clause and the Challenge
of Intelligent Design (Rowman
& Littlefield, 2003), Do
the Right Thing: Readings in Applied Ethics and Social Philosophy,
2nd ed. (Wadsworth, 2002), and Relativism:
Feet Firmly Planted in Mid-Air (Baker
Book House, 1998). His forthcoming books are Return to Rome:
Confessions of an Evangelical Catholic (Brazos
Press, 2009) and Is
Statecraft Soulcraft?: Christianity and Politics (InterVarsity Press,
2009)
He has also published over 80 articles, book chapters,
and reference work entries. Recent
articles have appeared in Christian Bioethics, Hastings Constitutional
Law Quarterly, Journal
of Medicine & Philosophy, Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics &
Public Policy, Journal of Law & Religion, Philosophia
