Links to Hospice, Palliative Care & Related Sites
PubMed (National Library of Medicine) - To me, the best and most current source of health and medical information on the Internet. PubMed has an enormous database of medical and healthcare articles and most are abstracted. The material is technical - much is scientific and at a cellular level - and is not oriented to any particular field. The search may be arduous, but results illuminating.
Trappistcaskets.com - Not just lovely and inexpensive caskets, but helpful information on living, dying, and death for anyone & also information on Catholic and Trappist beliefs and traditions. A lovely, quiet web site.
About.com - Excellent place to start in understanding cancer, palliative care, and related. Information on most tumor types. Some older references, but basic information very good.
Harvard Medical School Guide to Diagnostic Tests - Oriented to lay persons. Tells why, what to expect, and more.
Dying Well.org/ - Good site with practical information from Ira Byock, MD, a respected pallaitive care physician. Not much on symptom management.
National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization - NHPCO was the first hospice professional group. Has searchable database of accredited hospices. You can order books and other materials from them.
American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine - AAHPM is physician and member-oriented. You can buy very good book on basics of hospice and palliative care from them: Primer of Palliative Care by Porter Storey, M.D.
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center - The MSK site is an excellent source of information on cancer treatment and related matters. Thanks, Sally.
International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care
National Foundation for Treatment of Pain
Roxane Institute - Roxane is a manufacturer of pain medications and has worked to disseminate information on hospice and palliative care in general. Newsletters provide summaries of important articles. No medication samples though. They are changing web site, so address may change. Just search for Roxane.
University of Utah Pain Management Center - Lists accredited pain management centers throughout U.S.
Robert Wood Johnson Site Center to Advance Palliative Care - The RWJ Foundation is a major national source of funding for research and issues related to quality of life. No individual grants.
