What is diabetes?
- Insulin is a hormone
that our bodies use to convert food into fuel that the cells of the body
use for energy.
- In diabetes, either
the body does not produce insulin or is not able to use the insulin properly.
As a result the level of sugar in the blood rises which is harmful to the
body.
- Normal blood sugar
level is 65-110
You are at greater
risk if:
- Someone in your family
has diabetes
- You are over age 45
- You are overweight
Uncontrolled diabetes
can cause serious problems with your:
- Heart & circulation
- Eyes
- Kidneys
- Nerves
What can I do to prevent
diabetes?
- Exercise 3-5 times
per week (walking, climbing stairs, jumping rope)
- Nutrition
- reduce fat (red meat, cheese, ice cream)
- increase fiber (whole-grain bread, cooked beans, fruits, vegetables)
- eat more fruits and vegetables
- cut down on sugar (soda, desserts)
- Lose weight
What signs should I
look for?
- Blurred vision
- Increased infections
of the skin
- Numbness, tingling
in arms or legs
- Gradual increase in
thirst, hunger or urination
- Unintended weight loss
