The Viola Audition
The audition is the most important factor in determining whether or not a student will be accepted as a music major. The audition committee consists of string faculty members. An accompanist is not necessary, although you may wish to bring one. These guidelines are intended for entering freshmen. Transfer or more advanced students should consider these suggestions as minimal expectations.
Undergraduate viola audition requirements:
Students should prepare three selections that are contrasting in style and tempo and best demonstrate the player's abilities. Two movements from the same composition are acceptable. One of the selections may be an etude.
Suggested literature for a viola audition might be a movement from a standard viola concerto (with cadenza, if applicable) , a movement from the Bach Unaccompanied Suites, and a short piece or etude. Although not required, memorization is encouraged.
Graduate audition requirements:
A first movement of a standard 20th century viola concerto, two contrasting movements from the Bach Unaccompanied Suites, a short work of the candidate's choice demonstrating virtuosity and stylistic contrast.
