Girl Scouts of the USA
Kappa Delta works nationwide with the Girl Scouts of the USA to prepare girls for college and for life. Our chapter meets after school with Troop #7341 of the GS Bluebonnet Council to play games and do arts and crafts. The troop has recently been working on their sports badge and is learning basketball and softball. Last year, we helped our troop to earn over $600 in Girl Scout cookie sales, many of which were donated to soldiers overseas.
Prevent Child Abuse America
All of Kappa Delta's collegiate chapters and many alumnae associations have participated annually in Kappa Delta's Shamrock Event since 1981. Our chapter hosts an all-university male softball tournament. Of the total raised for the event, 80 percent is donated to the Children's Advocacy Center in Waco, and the other 20 percent is given to PCA America.
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Research Awards
Three awards of $20,000 are given annually to recognize outstanding research in orthopaedics and to enable researchers to continue their efforts. First presented in 1950, the awards have grown in stature to become known as the Nobel Prize of Orthopaedic Research, and one of the most coveted awards in this field. To date, over 1.1 million dollars in awards have been given.
Children's Hospital of Richmond, VA
In 1921, Kappa Delta made a commitment to support a 2-bed, fledgling clinic operated by William Tate Graham, M.D. He was renowned for his revolutionary approaches. A pioneer in treating polio victims, he never turned any patient away for inability to pay. Now Children's Hospital treats all children's problems and still turns away no one for financial reasons. Kappa Delta's support continues--donating funds which have gone to build an operating room, develop a clinic, and buy a van to transport patients. The sorority is a primary sustaining supporter of the hospital and Kappa Deltas serve on its governing boards.
More Programs Supported by KΔ
In addition to the four main philanthropies listed above, Kappa Delta also participates in several other programs. These include The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty (helping to raise self-esteem in girls and women), National Women's Friendship Day (a holiday created by KΔ to celebrate and treasure the friendships shared among women everywhere), and KiDs Grants (encouraging Kappa Delta members to be actively involved with children in their communities).
Support for Other Philanthropies
In addition to working to benefit our own philanthropies, Kappa Delta also gets involved in helping other groups on campus benefit their philanthropies. In the past, members of Epsilon Chi have participated in ΠKΦ's Pies for Push, ΛXA's Watermelon Bash, KΩT Fishery, XΩ's Chili Cookoff, ATΩ's Bed Races, and Baylor University's Steppin' Out.
