Welcome to Baylor Horizons
Since it was chartered in 1845, Baylor's mission has been to develop students who have a Christian commitment to service and leadership. It is upon this foundation that Baylor Horizons begins in fall 2001. Funded by a Lilly Endowment grant, the Baylor Horizons initiative will help the Baylor community become familiar with a larger understanding and application of "vocation" - an understanding that dismisses boundaries that traditionally separate the sacred and the secular, suggesting that, in the proper context, all work can be considered service to God.
As the dictionary definition suggests, "vocation" has many meanings and applications for incoming students, faculty and staff members and administrators. Baylor Horizons is a multifaceted, three-year initiative that will explore these meanings with innovative, practical and scholarly programs that will span disciplines, divisions, schools and constituencies across campus.
As Christians, we are all called to live a life of service, whether through the social roles of parent, family member or friend; the professional roles of computer programmer or university professor; or the visibly ministerial roles of pastor, missionary or educator. Choosing and developing a career provides us one more opportunity as the people of God to employ our talents, knowledge and life experiences to better our world.
Ask yourself:
What would the world be like - what would I be like - if we all lived our lives and approached our careers as though "working for the Lord"? Would I be different? Would the world be different?
