The symbols of Alpha Delta Pi are unique and special to our organization. Each has its own significance and all are extremely meaningful since they were chosen by our founders more than one hundred and fifty-five years ago. We treat these symbols with the greatest amount of respect by upholding the high ideals of our sisterhood.

Alpha is Greek for the beginning, and Wesleyan College for Women is where it all began for Alpha Delta Pi in 1851. Not only did ADP become a forerunner for the sorority system, but she also played an important role in the advancement of education for the American female. We are proud to be the oldest society for women and take pride in being the "First and Finest." Women that are undergoing the education process to become initiated into Alpha Delta Pi are called Alpha members. |

Delta means change in geometry, and Alpha Delta Pi definitely reflects this characteristic. As the oldest secret society for women, we have successfully changed with the times to continue helping women reach their full potential both scholastically and socially. Our initiated collegiate members are referred to as Delta members, signifying the development of life skills of our members that ADP fosters. |

In geometry, Pi represents infinity. Just as Alpha Delta Pi has been in existence since 1851, we anticipate continuing strong throughout time. Our college graduate sisters are referred to as Pi members, signifying the unending sisterhood of Alpha Delta Pi. |

Azure Blue and White are the official colors of Alpha Delta Pi. Azure Blue symbolizes friendship, the basic spirit upon which Alpha Delta Pi is founded. White symbolizes sincerity and truth, both of which Alpha Delta Pi seeks in all of its members. |

The Woodland Violet is the official flower of
Alpha Delta Pi
| Our official mascot is the lion, nicknamed Alphie. As a symbol of beauty and strength, the lion serves as Alpha Delta Pi's mascot. Within each member, the lion sounds strong and strides confidently forward to pursue her goal. The lion represents the strength of mind and the strength of character of each sister in Alpha Delta Pi. | ![]() |
Alpha Delta Pi was founded upon the Christian principles found in Psalm 15. Our six founders, four the daughters of ministers and church leaders, decided upon the verses as part of the values Alpha Delta Pi sisters strive to emulate.
"Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved."

The "Adelphean of Alpha Delta Pi" is a quarterly published educational journal of college life and alumnae achievement. It is the official publication of Alpha Delta Pi. |
"We Live For Each Other" is the Open Motto of Alpha Delta Pi.
| The Diamond symbolizes the strength and value of friendships. The diamond represents purity, and the four points represent the symmetry of a balanced life. With each new jewel we discover in chapter, we are still amazed by the beauty and longevity of each individual member as they sparkle and shine!! | ![]() |
The first badge was worn by the Adelpheans in 1851. It was a satin riband with ribbon streamers; the name "Adelphean" appeared on one end, and a design of clasped hands at the other end. In the center was the Open Motto "We Live For Each Other."

This is the official badge as we know it today. In 1906, during the Alpha Delta Pi's first convention, this design with the smaller gold badge with a black enamel center which pictures the clasped hands, the two stars, and the Greek letters was proposed. Its clasped hands represent friendship and the stars represent beauty of character and beauty of mind. Upon initiation, members are allowed to wear the pin.

The original Coat of Arms was designed by Elizabeth Moseley Coles and Agnes Chapman. Symbolism from our ritual and our Alpha pin were combined in the Coat of Arms and the design originally had a background of violets. In 1919 the Convention body voted to make changes and the present design was accepted. |

I BELIEVE in Alpha Delta Pi.
I BELIEVE that my sorority is more than a ritual or a symbol; that it is a way of life.
I BELIEVE that the principles established by our founders in 1851 are enduring attributes, exemplifying the highest ideals of Christian womanhood.
I BELIEVE that our motto "We Live For Each Other," expresses the true spirit of fraternity; and that by living this motto my life will be enriched by true friendships and by unselfish service to mankind.
I BELIEVE that the privilege of membership in Alpha Delta Pi brings the responsibility to do my best in whatever I undertake, always remembering that leadership requires confidence tempered with humility and courage blended with tolerance.
I BELIEVE that I must strive to become a well-balanced person by following the dictates of the four points symbolized by our diamond-shaped badge: first, strengthening my own character and personality; second, watching my attitudes toward my fellow-beings; third, recognizing the value of high educational standards; and fourth, developing faith and loyalty.
I BELIEVE that these four guide-posts, guarded by the stars and friendly hands clasped in the Adelphean bonds of fellowship, will lead me to achieve a rich and useful life.
