The following chapters excerpted from the second edition of Oral History for Texans are reproduced with the permission of the author, Dr. Thomas L. Charlton, and the publisher, The Texas Historical Commission.

Oral History for Texans is out-of-print today, but the book is still widely available in public and academic libraries.  Originally intended for use by historically-minded persons preparing for the 1986 sesquicentennial celebration of Texas independence, this classic book provides comprehensive instructions in interviewing techniques and project design still relevant for twenty-first century oral historians throughout the world.

In the chapters presented here, persons new to oral history research will learn how to plan their projects and to employ the best strategies for interviewing, including the funnel-shaped sequence for framing questions.  Seasoned professional oral historians will find inspiration to do a better job with their important work of collecting and interpreting the diverse personal and social experiences that compose the human story.
