Magellan Movie Night on Campus

The Magellan Society has gotten the wonderful idea to show some culturally-related movie on campus to the general Baylor student body.  The movies are free, and refreshments are usually provided.  This students who attend are showed a PowerPoint presentation about the Magellan Society just prior to the beginning of the movie, in hopes that some of these students would join.  This provides us a chance to show the student body that we are here, and that we are always recruiting.

“The Terminal”

January 17, 2005

Definitely a cool event, the Magellan Movie Night on campus provided an opportunity for students to see movies they have not seen before.  Obviously, because of the aim of the Magellan Society, we have tried to show culturally based movies.  Because of the success of last semester’s free movie night, we decided to continue this event.  This semester, we showed Steven Spielberg's “The Terminal,” which portrays the quirky event of a foreign man who falls through the cracks of the US immigration system and gets stranded in the International Terminal in New York.  The man must adjust to the language and also to the customs of the US.

“Havana Nights”

with Special Guest Performance

by Latin Dance Society

September 1, 2004

In order to attract new members and also to provide a social event for the campus, the Magellan Society hosted a "Free Movie Night" in the Bennett Auditorium of Draper Hall.  The film shown was Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which views the relationship of two culturally different individuals in the midst of the Cuban Revolution who are brought together through the love of dance.

The movie presented conflict between different cultures and emphasized the importance of looking beyond the surface.  This theme fits nicely in the Magellan Aspect of "Cultural Awareness/Appreciation."

To start off this amazing night and also to extend the theme of the night, representatives from the Latin Dance Society performed an awesome dance to the song "La Vida es un Carnival" by Celia Cruz.  This night gave the attendees a chance to see what the Magellan Society and the Latin Dance Society was about through Power Point slides prior to the movie.
