Basic Laptop Information

Turning ON the Laptop:

The power button for the laptop is located directly above the keyboard. The laptop should be powered down by selecting Shutdown in the Start Menu. However, if you must turn the laptop off manually, press and hold the power button until the laptop is off.

To connect to the network, you must log in with your Bear ID and password..

Battery Power/Status:

A fully charged battery lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours. You can check the status of the battery by doing the following:

  1. From the "Start" menu, select "Settings" and then "Control Panel";
  2. When the "Control Panel" window is open, find the "Power" icon and double click on it;
  3. The "Power" window will display the amount of battery life left in a percentage and it will also estimate the amount of time remaining before the battery expires.
The laptop will notify you via a pop-up dialog box when the battery begins to run low. At that point, you should save any work to your disk or transfer it to your email account and shut down the laptop. Q: For what length of time can I borrow a laptop?
A: A laptop may be checked out for four hours at a time. They may be renewed as long as you wish. All laptops are due by closing in the Information Commons.

Q: Can I put a laptop on hold or recall a laptop from another borrower?
A: If all laptops are checked out, you may be placed on a waiting for the next available laptop. See a lab consultant at the Information Commons attendant desk. Your Baylor ID card will be required to check out a CoasterCall Pager, which can be taken anywhere in the Moody/Jones Library facility. You will be paged when a laptop is available. The coaster will vibrate for three minutes, and you have a total five minute grace period to return to the Information Commons for your laptop. If you do not return within that grace period, the next person on the waiting list will be paged. The coasters are checked out to patrons in four hour increments and must be checked in. Lost or stolen coasters result in a $200 fine.

Q: What is the latest I can check out a laptop?
A: laptops must be returned by the time the Information Commons closes. They may be checked out until one hour before that time.

Q: How do I print from a laptop?
A: Use the Print Locator icon, located on the desktop, and follow the instructions given on the Print Locator webpage. Choose a convient printer and install per the instructions given. Return to the program you wish to print from and Print. The printer you installed shouldbe automatically defaulted to. If you experience difficulty, see a lab consultant at the Information Commons attendant desk. Q: What does this error message mean? "Unable to locate the server www.'sitename'.com. Please check the server name and try again."
A: The laptop may have lost its network connection. Try a few other sites to see if the same error message appears. If it does, open an Internet Explorer browser and re-authenticate through the NetAuth page. If this does not fix the problem try restarting the laptop through the Shutdown command in the Start menu and log in to the network again with your Bear ID and password. If further assistance is needed, return to the Information Commons and see a lab consultant.

Q: Can I take the laptop out of the building?
A: No, laptops are not allowed to leave the building! If a library laptop is taken from the building, it is assumed to be stolen and the Baylor Police Department will be notified. A stolen laptop results in a $3000 fine.

A: Problems with your network connection or with laptop hardware or software should be brought to the attention of staff at the Information Commons service desk or the staff of the Moody Garden Level Computer Lab.
