What is Project 9-11?

Following the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, the Archivist asked Access Services in Moody Library to save newspapers related to this event. Normally, newspapers are discarded when the microfilm arrives. Jerry Herring saved the papers for the week following the tragedy with the approval of Linda Cobb, Head of Access Services.

Project 9-11 is the BCPM's attempt to preserve as much of the original, as well as continuing, publications concerning the attacks. We seek to make these easily available to researchers worldwide as well as in the Waco area.

One of our most daunting tasks is the digitalization of the newspapers from the day of September 11 and for several days after. All libraries microfilmed these newspapers or possibily scanned the front page of these newpapers. We here at the BCPM have gone above an beyond the norm and are scanning all of the newspapers so that every article about the attacks can be read in full color.

Issues from around two dozen different news papers were saved. Once the papers were transferred to the BCPM, they were separated and arranged by date.

Front Page headlines:

* Newspapers on Sept. 11, before the event - What was important in the news.
* Special editions on Sept. 11.
* Wednesday, Sept. 12
* Thursday, Sept 13
* Friday, Sept. 14
* Saturday, Sept. 15
* Sunday, Sept 16
* Monday and following, Sept 17+
* Foreign Language newspapers from Sept. 12.

Topics

* Airport Security
* Business
* Children
* Commentary
* General
* Media (how the event impacted movies, TV, etc.)
* Metro/Style (how the event impacted locally)
* Patriotism/flags
* Religion
* Special reports
Sports (how sports events were cancelled, etc)

In addition, the staff continues to save special sections from the New York Times dealing with the crisis which includes a page every day on casualities. Some issues of Time magazine have also been saved as part of this collection.

Current plans are to display some of these newspapers in the foyer of Moody on the one year anniversary of the event. The BCPM staff also hopes to make color photocopies of many of the front pages as well as many of the articles.

Anyone with additional magazines or other types of materials are welcome to contribute to this special event collection.

All of these materials are open to researchers.
