Statement
I. Administration, State of Texas
Any major legislation during Place's tenure can be documented in the
first series: Administration. There are four sub-series under this: Agencies
(82 files), Interstate Commerce Commission (295 files), Committee of Criminal
Jurisprudence (40 files) , and Task Force on Illegal Gambling 51 files).
Examples of agencies covered include: Texas Commission on Alcohol and
Drug Abuse, Education Coordinating Board, Joint Select Committee on Jury
Handbook, and Texas Punishment Standrad Commission.
The subseries for the Interstate Commerce Commission deals with the merger
of the Burlington Northern and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fee railways.
Included is information on such topics as AMTRAK, Arizona Electric Power
Coperative, Farmrail Corp. And Grainbelt, serveral power and light companies,
several railway companies, Western Coal Traffice League, and Western Resources.
The Sub-series for Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence contains information
about bills related to the death penalty, committee meetings, agendas,
and the Subcommittee on Laws and Procedures Relating to Death Sentences.
The Task Force on Illegal Gambling sub-series contains extensive information
on gambling laws from every sate. This information was compiled in 1997.
II. Correspondence
The second series containing correspondence is divided into two subseries:
People (19 files) and Topics (213 files). The People subseries is small
and contains letters from public officials dealing with specific subjects
such as employee retirement, concealed handguns, medicaid fraud, firearms,
jail inmates. The second subseries contains 213 folders arranged by topic
by legislative session: 72nd - 75th.
III. Legislation
The Legislation series is also divided into two subseries: Bills by legislative
number 575 files) and Reports 53 files). There are 575 folders of various
bills from the 72nd to the 75th legislature including
a number of special called sessions. Bills are arranged in numerical order,
then chronologically. The Reports subseries contains master lists of bills,
daily floor reports, lists of bills passed, and some schedules.
IV. Publications
The Publication series is divided into four subseries: Reports (395 files),
Legislative Clipping Service43 files), Texas Register88 files), and Journals
(66 files). Reports contain publications by state agencies, departments,
and commissions. Most of these 395 items have been cataloged. Copies of
the title pages have been retained in the files. The Finding Aid contains
a complete list by title with call number. The Legislative Clipping Service
contains articles about the Texas legislature from January 1992 to January
1996. Copies of the Texas Register go from January 1991 to December 1993
with additional scattered issues from 1994 and 1995. There are also House
and Senate Journals from 1991, 1992, and 1993.
