Scope and Content
of the Papers
The papers of Reid Murray
document his years as a U. S. Representative from Wisconsin
from 1939 until his death in 1952. There are only eleven
files created from materials found in a large brown envelope
labeled "Mr. Murray's Desk." This Personal Series contains
biographical information, a guest book, Remarks for the
Congressional Record both printed and handwritten,
and various articles.
The Scrapbook series contains
the bulk of the collection. There are thirteen large
scrapbooks filled with news clippings about Reid Murray and
Congress during his terms of service from 1939 to 1952. Ten
scrapbooks contain Remarks from the Congressional
Record during Murray's years in Congress, 1939-1952.
These books each have an index in the front which lists
every article in each scrapbook. Beginning in 1948, the
scrapbooks are numbered back to front.
Three scrapbooks contain news
clippings from Wisconsin newspapers about Murray and/or
agriculture from 1940-1952. The last of these also contains
articles about Murray's death in 1952.

Custodial
History
These papers were deposited in
the Baylor Collections of Political Materials by Hyde
Murray, son of Reid F. Murray. Hyde Murray was legal counsel
to the Committee on Agricultural of the U. S. House of
Representatives when W. R. Poage was Chairman of the
Committee. Therefore, because Poage's papers are part of the
BCPM, Murray donated his papers from the Poage era to the
BCPM also. Since Reid F. Murray, was a congressman from
Wisconsin, the BCPM staff contacted the Wisconsin Historical
Society in 1994 regarding the transfer of these papers. The
transfer was put on hold pending permission from Hyde
Murray. No further contact has been made as of October 2000.
The Deed of Gift for the Hyde H. Murray Papers includes the
Reid F. Murray Papers.
