The meeting opened with a review of announcements from the Advisory
council. Highlights included a planned continuing education web course
and a possible pre-conference for the 2001 annual meeting. Plans for the
Discussion Forum were finalized. The committee discussed current project.
Projects include the committee's web tutorial valuation criteria page and
the posting of book reviews by the committee to Amazon.com. The meeting
closed with a discussion of plans to start an annotated bibliography on
designing library assignments.
Instruction for Diverse Populations Committee
Meeting
The committee meeting started with a report on the Council on Minority
Concerns and Cultural Diversity work session. The members then discussed
their current project and set deadlines concerning it. The final section
of the meeting addressed the possible print and electronic means to publish
the finished product of their project. At the committee's second
meeting, members worked on the draft for a poster session proposal for
the Diversity Fair at ALA's annual meeting.
LITA Human Machine Interface Interest Group
The members devoted a large portion of the meeting to brainstorming
a theme for the 2001 annual conference. Ideas were offered and discussed.
A discussion ensued as to the best forum for the program. Information on
a newly established listserv was brought up and the session ended with
the election of new officers.
ACRL/IS Model Statement Revision Committee
Committee members worked on revising the "Model Statement of Objectives"
which was originally written in 1979. This two-year task force will
continue to meet and amend the existing draft statement. Progress can be

RUSA/MOUSS Catalog Use Committee
Committee members focused on marketing their upcoming program,"Is MARC
dead. The discussion panel will be held at the annual conference in Chicago.
In formation on these issues would be of great benefit to instruction librarians.

Alliances for New Directions and Teaching
and Learning Discussion Group
The goal for this committee meeting was to discuss program ideas for
the 2000 annual ALA meeting. The topic of librarians working with Internet
search engine vendor to construct search engines was discussed. As teachers
of the internet, librarians could secure a niche for themselves within
the information infrastructure and level the internet field for those relatively
new searchers.
AASL/ACRL Joint Task Force Meets at ALA Midwinter
to Discuss the Educational Role of Libraries
This joint AASL/ACRL joint task force met to discuss its draft plan,
"Blueprint for Collaboration". This document outlined several ways
AASL and ACRL might work together to accomplish their goals. The
task force made specific recommendations and offered ideas for potential
joint activities. Interested EBSS members can review the draft document

LITA Distance Learning Interest Group
The committee concentrated on the finalization of plans for the annual
program this summer. The title of the program will be "Distance Learning
Abroad: Challenges and Solutions to Distance Learning Library Services
to Foreign Countries". There is one confirmed speaker with others under
consideration.
A discussion of topics for the 2001 program followed.
ACRL/EBSS/Instruction for Educators
Committee members conducted a lively discussion of topics pertaining
to distance education. One particular topic of interest was the provision
of library services to distance education students in a non-library setting.
Members then offered suggestions and ideas.
ACRL/IS Critical Issues in Distance
Education Committee
Dane Ward, former chair and editor of the committee's new book, opened
the meeting with a report. The book has gone to the publishers and
should be out later in the year. Committee work focused on two short-term
projects, both with hopes of publication. A second long-term project involves
the revision of the October 1992 article "Information retrieval and evaluation
skills for education students". New technologies and standards have
made it necessary to revisit this article.
