From the Editor

I often have exaggerated expectations about the amount of work that may
be accomplished during a summer. And, I admit, amusements do insist on
competing with more virtuous projects. Of course, no summer--no matter
how hot and lazy the afternoons may seem--is long enough for everything
I would like to do. So, after a few weeks, I come to my senses, make
some choices, and set some priorities.
Summer can be a good time to pursue professional growth opportunities.
This issue of the newsletter includes the Continuing Education Committee's
"LIRT's Top Twenty," an annual feature that identifies the best articles
on library instruction published in the preceding year. Reading the
articles on this year's list would be a worthwhile project for those of
us who have been too busy to read the professional literature for the
past few months. As Martha Stewart would say, "Growth, it's a good
thing."
I hope one of your priorities this summer will be to participate in
LIRT in some manner. You may choose to participate by attending the
annual conference in Washington, or by contributing to the discussion on
the LIRT-L electronic discussion list, or by writing an article to be published
in this newsletter. Whatever your mode of participation, rest assured
that your efforts will be valued and appreciated by other librarians who,
like you, are choosing among their own multitudinous
worthy priorities.
