MISSION STATEMENT MISSION, GOALS & OBJECTIVES OF LIRT
The purpose of the Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) is to advocate library instruction as a means for developing competent library and information access skills, along with their use, as a part of lifelong learning. LIRT supports those who provide library instruction. LIRT membership represents all types of libraries committed to these goals.
ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL 1
To increase professional and public awareness of library instruction as an essential service.
Objectives
1.1 To develop instructional materials and coordinate programs that will increase an awareness of the need for library instruction.
1.2 To plan and present programs designed to contribute to the education of librarians for library instruction.
1.3 To publish resources that demonstrate the library's role in developing problem-solving and critical think skills.ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL 2
To encourage the development of American Library Association policy promoting library instruction.
Objectives
2.1 To take an active role in establishing and maintaining coalitions of instruction-related groups within ALA.
2.2 To maintain contact with library instruction-related groups (within ALA as well as other national and regional organizations) in order to solicit and disseminate information and develop joint projects which further professional and public awareness of the benefits of library instruction.
2.3 To encourage and support individuals who are running for ALA office and who are committed to the concept of library instruction.ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL 3
To assist library practitioners in the development, improvement, and promotion of library instruction.
Objectives
3.1 To design programs and publications which will encourage discussion of library instruction.
3.2 To provide a newsletter as a major source of communication and as a means of sharing ideas.
3.3 To report outstanding library instructional efforts as reflected by the literature.ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL 4
To broaden the base of membership involvement in the activities of LIRT by attracting active members from all types of libraries.
Objectives
4.1 To assess the needs of members in order to increase the effectiveness of LIRT.
4.2 To develop public relations strategies directed toward specific types of librarians.
4.3 To develop LIRT discussion groups that involve individuals who are not presently serving on LIRT committees.
4.4 To promote membership by communicating and cooperating with other professional library groups.
4.5 To plan and present programs, publications, and research designed to meet the identified needs of those interested in library instruction (whether or not they are able to attend national meetings).ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL 5
To provide opportunities in which librarians from all types of libraries can share ideas about library instruction.
Objectives
5.1 To sponsor, coordinate, and publicize an open forum during Midwinter conferences.
5.2 To provide opportunities for formal and informal communication among librarians during annual conferences.ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL 6
To encourage the networking of professional library instruction groups at the state and regional levels.
Objectives
6.1 To develop strategies that will assist state/regional groups to network.
6.2 To investigate the reproduction of LIRT and other instruction programs using current electronic and/or multi-media formats.
6.3 To allow, on a regular basis, opportunities in the Newsletter for state/regional instructional groups to announce upcoming programs or solicit advice/assistance.ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL 7
To encourage library schools to include education for bibliographic instruction in their curricula.
Objectives
7.1 To work with other library instruction groups to identify competencies for librarians involved with bibliographic instruction.
7.2 To work with ALA, IULC, and other appropriate groups to develop standards for adoption by the ALA Council.ORGANIZATIONAL GOAL 8
To maintain an organizational structure that enables the implementation of the goals and objectives of the Library Instruction Round Table.
Objectives
8.1 To maintain a constitution and by-laws that are responsive to the changing needs of the organization and of the instruction librarians who make up its membership.
8.2 To develop, evaluate, and maintain materials that explain responsibilities and procedures to officers and committee chairs and that facilitate the continuation of the work of the organization.
8.3 To develop, evaluate, and maintain training sessions for the officers and committee chairs that explain responsibilities and procedures to facilitate the continuation of the work of the organization.
