Waco EMBA program expanding to Austin
Baylor's 11-year-old Waco Executive MBA (EMBA) program is expanding to include Austin. Beginning next fall, Monday and Thursday evening classes will be conducted on an alternating basis at Baylor's Waco campus and at Motorola University on West Parmer Lane in Austin. Internet-based distance learning will comprise 25 percent of the 21-month curriculum, which is designed for people already engaged in full-time business careers. Full story link.

Dallas EMBA Program among top 25 in the world
Baylor's Executive MBA program in Dallas has risen again this year in the prestigious Financial Times rankings of the world’s best EMBA programs. The Financial Times business newspaper, printed in 19 cities around the world, rates Baylor’s EMBA program 25th among all EMBA programs in the world. It ranked No. 14 in the United States, No. 2 in the state of Texas, and No. 1 in the Dallas metroplex. Full story link.

MBA students describe their summer internship experiences
Baylor MBA students make the most of their summers by participating in internships that complement and enhance their classroom discussions. In their own words, six MBA students describe the internships they completed this past summer in varied disciplines encompassing customer relationship management, financial forecasting, banking in Spain, programming, operations and finance for an NBC television station, and Web design incorporating an "ordering platform." Baylor co-sponsors Dec. 4 Stephen Covey seminar in Austin
The Baylor EMBA program is bringing internationally renowned leadership development authority Stephen R. Covey to conduct a full-day seminar on Dec. 4 in Austin, in partnership with the LumaCore Corp. and Fortune magazine. Covey's discussion, drawing from his forthcoming book, will concentrate on "The New Habits of Effective People: The Future of Leadership." Business school Dean Terry S. Maness will introduce Covey, who will discuss ways in which organizations can engage people for success, how to build trust and openness, how to anticipate the four most chronic organizational problems and how to release the hidden talents of employees. Alumnus Dr. Joe Cunningham influences national health policy
Waco physician Dr. Joe Cunningham, who has assumed increasingly prominent roles in reshaping statewide and national health care policies, credits his completion of Baylor’s Executive MBA program in 2001 for giving him a better understanding of the health care system. Dr. Cunningham, who is executive director of the Providence Health Alliance physician group, and medical director and a senior vice president of Providence Health Center in Waco, holds leadership positions on numerous medical boards and routinely serves on legislative advisory commissions. He believes his MBA degree has given him the foundation of knowledge through which to conceive, negotiate and enact significant improvements within the health care industry. Full story link.

Two Baylor grads score among top 10 in CPA exams
For the second time this year, two Baylor graduates registered among the top 10 highest Texas CPA examination scores reported by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. The high-scoring alumni are Michelle Walton Downs and Scott Schieffer, both of whom graduated in 2001. Downs and Schieffer both earned the honor of speaking at CPA swearing-in ceremonies on Nov. 2. Downs spoke in Austin, while Schieffer took the stage in Arlington. They have strong commendations for the preparation they received at Baylor. Full story link.

Baylor students managing $1 million investment fund
Baylor University’s business students are now managing a live $1 million portfolio that is helping to generate funds for student scholarships. The investment fund was established in the spring of 2000 with a $250,000 endowment, along with $150,000 in gifts from alumni and friends. The fund is managed actively by select graduate students and senior undergraduates as part of a class, “Practicum in Portfolio Management.” In the first year and a half, the fund has exceeded S&P earnings by 14 percent.
