Graduate School story- By Dr. Larry Lyon, Dean of the Graduate
School
The goals and aspirations outlined in the Baylor 2012
Vision are nothing short of audacious, by any standard. Academically,
few universities have ever moved as far and fast as we plan to do. Religiously,
no Protestant university has ever moved this far without secularizing.
Yet, I will argue that none of Baylor’s goals are as audacious
or unprecedented as those ascribed to the Graduate School.
MBA alumnus Geoff Moore
hitting his goals
Talent wins only if it works harder. Baylor MBA alumnus Geoff Moore
has turned that observation into a guiding influence that has helped
shaped his career as an executive with the Dallas Stars National Hockey
League franchise. And just as NHL players do, he’s adroitly overcome
and circumvented obstacles and interference, while choosing to ignore
distracting influences.
Dawn Carlson tells how
to get “Beyond Juggling”
All the world’s a stage, we’ve been told.
And on that stage, all of us are jugglers. We’ve become adept
at pleasing the boss and serving our customers, motivating our co-workers,
meeting deadlines, launching new projects while finishing others, commuting
to work but finding time to spend at home, donating to charities but
saving for retirement, spending time with the kids and performing community
service. Cooking, washing the car, grocery shopping, taking out the
trash, fixing the leaky faucet. The more balls we manage to keep moving
through the air, the more new ones life keeps throwing at us.
ABC News profiles Blaine
McCormick’s ideas
Baylor Assistant Professor Blaine McCormick, whose research
relates the writings of Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison to success in
business today, has captured the attention not only of his students
but also of ABC News. McCormick was profiled as part of a feature story
on America’s founding fathers nationally broadcast Sept. 24 on
ABC World News Tonight. The story by anchor Peter Jennings included
a clip of McCormick’s presentation on Franklin’s management
style. McCormick’s ideas are discussed in Jennings’ new
book, In Search of America, co-written by Todd Brewster
Baylor’s Patricia
Norman evaluates importance of trust
Company assets are often described in physical terms—the
cost of office and manufacturing equipment and buildings. But core competencies
and proprietary knowledge comprise the fundamental worth of companies.
That’s especially true for high-technology companies.
