Overview
East Africa Semester Abroad
- Location & Length
Based at the Brackenhurst Baptist International
Conference Centre, near Nairobi, Kenya, with excursions to other
parts of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The program is one semester
in length (late August to mid December).
- Accommodations
Students reside at the Brackenhurst facility (which
includes rooms accommodating 2 to 5 students, private baths,
dining facilities, and classrooms) for six weeks. Five weeks are
spent in rural or urban homestays with Kenyan families, three
weeks in housing provided by non-government or mission agencies
(during the internship), and one week camping in game
preserves.
- Faculty & Staff
The program operates under the auspices of the
African Studies Program of Baylor University, Waco, Texas,
which has experience operating academic programs in East Africa
since 1990. The coordinator of the program is
Dr.
Blake Burleson, Acting Director of African Studies, Lecturer
in Religion, and Adjunct Professor of Health, Human Performance,
and Recreation. Dr. Burleson, in residence for part of each
semester, teaches one course in the program. The program is
operated in conjunction with
Africa Eschange
. The field director of the program, Mr. Sam Harrell,
is an American who resides in Kenya year-round with his family.
Mr. Harrell is an Adjunct Instructor in African Studies at Baylor
University. The field director is on hand at all times and
accompanies students on all organized group excursions.
Additionally, the program employs faculty members from the
University of Nairobi and other Kenyan institutions, a resident
Swahili instructor, and a driver.
- Eligibility
Qualifed students from any accredited American college
or university are eligible to apply. Particpants are selected from
applicants who show by their academic interests and attitude that
they will not only benefit from study abroad but that they are
sufficiently mature to adjust to the African environment.
- Cost for the 1999 program
$11,800. Includes: airfare (from New York), tuition,
room and board, books, passes, permits, visa fees, and
transportation within Kenya. Baylor University reserves the right
to change program costs at any time, though such increases are not
expected.
