East Africa Semester Abroad

Sam Harrell teaching on Brackenhurst campus

All courses, taught by Kenyan academics or professors from Baylor University, count as full Baylor credits. Students enroll in 13 to 17 hours:

SWA 1401/1402: Swahili (4-8 hrs)
Extensive classroom and field contact in the Swahili language. At least 4 hours must be taken by all students. Students are encouraged to take 8 hours throughout the semester.

AFS 3301: Africa Within the Contemporary World (3 hrs)
An interdisciplinary survey of the major themes in African culture, with an emphasis on the transition toward modernity.

Special Topics in African Studies (3 hrs)
Each student will take one of two offerings for the semester. Only two of the following will be offered in any given semester:

REL 4300: The Religions of East Africa
ENG 4374: East African Literature
HIS 4340: East African History

AFS 4301: Africa: Independent Study (3 hrs)
A required course of guided, individualized study based on the student's participation, journal record, and research of the following field components: rural/agricultural homestay, urban homestay, rural/pastoral homestay, ecology trip, and internship.
