Welcome to the
Baptist Association of Philosophy
Teachers
Web Site
The Baptist Association of Philosophy Teachers (BAPT), organized in 1987, exists to support the teaching of philosophy on baptist campuses, to enhance the intellectual tradition of baptists, and to provide a forum for the integration of evangelical Christian faith with philosophical scholarship. BAPT serves its members as a forum for shared concerns, a sounding board for addressing philosophical issues, and a network for the encouragement of professional development. At this site, you will find a variety of materials including a directory of members, announcements for future conferences and seminars, related links, and (in time) selected essays.
Information
Meetings
Biennial meetings are held on a weekend in September or October. The programs consist of member papers, invited addresses, panel discussions, teaching demonstrations, and student papers. There is a brief business session and usually a social event. A call for participation is extended in the January before the meeting. The next biennial meeting will be held in Fall 2008.
In the years in which there is no regular meeting BAPT invites the philosophical community to a one-week seminar. Past seminars have been led in 1992 by Carl Vaught (Penn State) on Augustine's Confessions, in 1994 by David Solomon (Notre Dame) on Contemporary Virtue Ethics, in 1996 by C. Stephen Evans (Calvin) on Kierkegaard's Philosophical Fragments and Concluding Unscientific Postscript, and in 1999 by Merold Westphal (Fordham) on Christianity and Postmodernism, in 2001 by Ernan McMullin (Notre Dame) on Natural Science and Christian Theology, and in 2003 by Robert Roberts (Baylor) and Jay Wood (Wheaton) on Epistemic Virture. The 1992 seminar was held at Penn State. In subsequent years, we convened at Moreau Seminary on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
